Maiyan (Vatna): The Sikh Turmeric Ceremony Guide

Everything about the Maiyan ceremony — the turmeric ritual, traditions, and what to expect.

What is the Maiyan?

The Maiyan (also known as Vatna) is a pre-wedding cleansing ritual where a paste of turmeric, mustard oil, and flour is applied to the bride and groom by close family members. It symbolizes purification and blessings.

The Ritual

  1. The bride/groom sits on a low stool (peerhi) covered with a red cloth
  2. A red thread (mauli) is tied to the wrist
  3. Close family members take turns applying the vatna (turmeric paste)
  4. Traditional folk songs (ghorhian) are sung
  5. The bride/groom should not leave the house after this ceremony until the wedding day

What You Need

  • - Haldi (turmeric) paste — turmeric powder mixed with mustard oil and flour
  • - Red cloth/chunni for the bride
  • - Peerhi (low wooden stool)
  • - Mauli (red thread)
  • - Old clothes (the turmeric will stain!)

Timeline

  • - Usually held 1-2 days before the wedding
  • - Duration: 1-2 hours
  • - Held separately at both the bride's and groom's homes

Tips

  • - Wear clothes you don't mind getting stained yellow
  • - Protect furniture and floors with old sheets
  • - It's a family-only event — keep it intimate
  • - Great photo opportunity — the yellow paste makes beautiful pictures
