Doli: The Sikh Bridal Farewell Tradition

Understanding the emotional Doli ceremony — what happens and how to prepare.

What is the Doli?

The Doli is the bride's farewell from her parents' home. It is one of the most emotional moments of the wedding. The bride throws handfuls of rice over her head, symbolizing prosperity and gratitude to her parents.

The Ceremony

  1. After the Anand Karaj, the bride says goodbye to her family
  2. She throws rice over her head as she walks to the car
  3. Family members gather around, often in tears
  4. The bride's brothers or cousins help her to the decorated car
  5. A family elder may recite a short Ardas (prayer) for her safe journey

What to Prepare

  • - Decorated car for the bride and groom
  • - Rice or flower petals for the bride to throw
  • - Tissues — it's an emotional moment
  • - Photographer positioned to capture the moment

Tips

  • - Schedule this right after the Anand Karaj and langar
  • - Allow enough time — it's not something to rush
  • - Brief the photographer on the significance
  • - Have water and snacks in the car for the couple
