Mehendi Night: Planning Your Sikh Henna Celebration

How to plan a beautiful Mehendi night — hiring artists, timing, music, and traditions.

What is the Mehendi?

Mehendi is a joyous celebration where intricate henna designs are applied to the bride's hands and feet. Traditionally, the groom's name is hidden within the designs. According to popular folk belief, the deeper the color of the henna, the stronger the bond with the partner.

Planning Your Mehendi

Hiring Artists - Book a professional mehendi artist 3-6 months in advance - Bridal mehendi takes 2-4 hours for intricate designs - Consider hiring multiple artists for guests - Ask for a portfolio and trial design

Timing - Usually held 1-2 days before the wedding - Start the bride's mehendi early — it takes the longest - Guest mehendi can happen simultaneously

Setup - Comfortable seating for the bride (she'll be sitting for hours) - Good lighting for the artist - Snacks and drinks within reach (the bride can't use her hands!) - Music, dancing, and entertainment for guests

Design Ideas

  • - Traditional: Peacock motifs, paisley patterns, floral designs
  • - Modern: Minimal geometric patterns, negative space designs
  • - Hidden elements: Groom's name, wedding date, meaningful symbols

Tips for Darker Color

  • - Leave the henna on for at least 6-8 hours (overnight is ideal)
  • - Apply a mixture of lemon juice and sugar once the henna is dry
  • - Keep hands warm — heat deepens the color
  • - Avoid water for 12-24 hours after application
